12,000+ miles, 3 states, 4 cities, 6 days, 10 retail destinations on the official tour and a lot more visited just for fun – the BCSC study tour to the West Coast USA certainly clocked up the numbers.

The trip was set against one of the most devastating weeks in the global financial markets – a week which started with the collapse of Lehman Brothers and ended with a $700 billion government bank bailout package being voted out by the US senate.
Despite the financial turmoil, some 40 intrepid tourists – covering the diversity of BCSC members including developers, fund managers, agents, architects, centre managers and marketing experts - travelled from the ‘Streets of San Francisco’ via Frasier’s Seattle to the Ocean’s Eleven glamour of the Las Vegas Strip to get a tantalising glimpse of the sheer variety of retailing on offer on the West Coast.
While some were old hands, having previously visited these cities, for many of us it was a voyage of discovery full of surprises, excitement, the occasional disappointment and a lot of fun.
The whole trip was fast and furious, fantastically well researched and organised by Leslie Jones’ Andrew Ogg and the BCSC team. As well as the many shopping centres there were lots of opportunities to see more of the cities we visited and the trip provided everyone with a real insight into shopping on the West Coast.
