AWARD CRITERIA

Awards will be given to projects that have developed the retail offer of the town or city centre in such a way as to enhance the local environment, whether aesthetically or functionally, through:

bullet improvements to the area’s attractiveness or accessibility that directly encourage retail, leisure or cultural based activities and/or community involvement
bullet promoting the concept of vibrant, competitive town centres that support a range of local businesses, encouraging people to shop, live, work, visit, and invest.
bullet achieving a holistic approach to the urban environment and the needs of visitors, employees and residents
bullet reflecting outstanding or innovative design standards, encouraging more effective, or more widespread use of the town centre offer
bullet addressing particular needs in areas such as transportation.

Although projects may focus on the whole town or city centre, initiatives that address the needs of a particular district within it, or across a group of towns pursuing a co-ordinated strategy, are also eligible.

Examples of relevant criteria include:

bullet Evidence of a specific retail-based offer developed through an effective partnership involving the local authority, local residents and and/or private enterprise, with a particular focus on innovative techniques or approaches likely to generate lasting benefits for the entire community or region
bullet A focus how the local retail offer or retail-based development impacts the overall ambience of the centre, addressing such issues as cleanliness, street furniture, streetscape, buildings and shop fronts and/or integrating historic themes and architectural heritage with current needs and expectations
bullet Retail-based or mixed-use projects that improve accessibility and circulation, while at the same time enhancing the town centre environment as a whole, focusing on the innovative development of signage or maps particularly as these might reflect or encourage the integration of transport modes such as park and ride, shopmobility, or walking and cycling
bullet Retail schemes in the mix of a vibrant evening or weekend economy and innovative techniques helping to maintain the life of the retail or town centre outside normal trading hours
bullet Retail at the heart of mixed use: strategies to promote a mix of retail, leisure and residential provision
bullet Improvements to safety and security as the result of retail development, encouraging safer shopping – could include the innovative use of technology and design
bullet Consultation across the spectrum of town centre users to deliver retail-led or mixed-use based improvements valued by the whole community
bullet Evidence of retail’s key role in developing good design as a fundamental requirement for vibrant, people-friendly centres, providing aesthetic appeal, variety and a unique urban space that engages the community
bullet Projects that demonstrate the achievement of clear objectives contributing to a clear retail strategy for the town centre

Award selection

Projects or programmes which, in the opinion of the judges, have excelled in meeting the criteria above are eligible to win a BCSC TCE award.There is no limit to the number of winners in any given year.
