Former Chairman of the John Lewis Partnership,
Chairman, Business Action on Economic Renewal Leadership Team
Sir Stuart Hampson became the John Lewis Partnership's fourth Chairman in February 1993.
Sir Stuart joined the Partnership in February 1982 and, after gaining retail experience in a number of department stores, he ran the Partnership's department store in Southampton, Tyrrell & Green (now John Lewis Southampton), as Managing Director for nearly three years.
In 1986 he was appointed to the Partnership's Central Board as Director of Research & Expansion and took charge of the Partnership's development programme. He was responsible for the first out-of-town John Lewis department store at High Wycombe (opened October 1988), as well as for new department stores at Aberdeen (October 1989) and Kingston (September 1990) and the relocation of Trewins in Watford (August 1990). The Deputy Chairmanship was added to his Partnership responsibilities in May 1989.
Sir Stuart has taken an active interest in planning policy and, as a founding member in May 1987 of the Oxford Retail Group, was closely involved in the debate on town centre/out-of-town development.
A Civil Service career for 12 years: the first part of Sir Stuart's career was spent in the Civil Service. He joined the Board of Trade in 1969, then served for two years in the UK Mission to the United Nations in Geneva
In 1978 he was appointed Principal Private Secretary to the Secretary of State for Prices and Consumer Protection, Mr Roy Hattersley, in which post he was particularly concerned with pay, prices and mergers policy. On the change of Government in 1979 he was successively Private Secretary to the Minister for Consumer Affairs (then Mrs Sally Oppenheim) and the Secretary of State for Trade (then Mr John Nott) where he was closely concerned with general economic policy and that Department's special interest in export promotion and competition policy. Subsequently he served Mr John Biffen, Secretary of State in the same department.
In April 1981 he was promoted to Assistant Secretary and assigned to the team under Sir Derek Rayner which examined aspects of the efficiency of the Civil Service. His project dealt with personnel management in the Department of Trade and Industry.
London First: Sir Stuart was a founding Deputy Chairman of London First, the private/public sector partnership aimed at maintaining London's standing as a world-class capital (October 1992-December 1997).
Royal Society of Arts: Sir Stuart was a member of the RSA Inquiry into Tomorrow's Company: The Role of Business in a Changing World, and became a director of the Centre for Tomorrow's Company in 1996, and Chairman in 1998/99. He was elected to the Council of the RSA in 1995, served as Treasurer in 1997 and Chairman of the Society from May 1999-October 2001.

Honours: Sir Stuart was made a Knight Bachelor in the Queen's Birthday honours 1998. In 2001 he was elected to an Honorary Fellowship at St John's College, Oxford, from where he took his first degree (in modern languages) in 1969. He received an honorary Doctorate in Business Administration from Kingston University in January 1998, and from Southampton Solent University in November 2001.
Background and family: Sir Stuart was born in January 1947. He and his wife, Angela, have two grown up children. They live in Buckinghamshire.

Martyn Chase BSc FRICS is Chairman of Retail, DTZ, for Europe, Middle East and Africa.
He was formerly Chairman of Donaldsons, which merged with DTZ in July 2006. He was previously head of Shopping Centre Investment and Development. Prior to that he was head of Local Authority Consultancy, a business he built up to become market leader, according to independent survey.
2008 sees the opening of a number of landmark projects which Martyn has been involved, including Victoria Square Belfast (Multi Development) and Highcross Leicester (Hammerson).
Martyn is President of BCSC. He holds a number of other voluntary positions including Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, member of Business in the Community London Leadership Team and Court Member of the Worshipful Company of Needlemakers.
Martyn is married with three children. In his spare time he is a keen sailor and member of the Royal Ocean Racing Club, Ocean Cruising Club and Bosham Sailing Club.
Prior to becoming Chief Executive of BCSC, Michael had spent 20 years with Marks & Spencer as well as two years at MEPC and six years running his own business.
At M & S, he was involved in the development of the move into Food Neighbourhood stores and out of town developments in the late 80’s and early 90’s. He was also responsible for the company taking a leading role in the development of Town Centre Management schemes throughout the country.
When at MEPC - the second largest property company in the country at the time - he worked in close partnership with some of their 1200 retail tenants in shopping centres.
His consultancy GTT Associates specialised in the implementation of business plans and funding for the management of town and city centres throughout the UK.
Michael is the first Chief Executive of BCSC and feels privileged to help shape the future of the retail property industry along with the active participation of BCSC members and stakeholders.
Jim Gill was born and brought up in the North West of England and educated at the London School of Economics and the University of Sussex.
Following a long career as first an economist and then a senior administrator in the Department of Trade and Industry, he joined the AMEC Group where he was a Director of AMEC Developments.
In 1994 he moved to English Partnerships where, as Regional Director, he built up the Agency's Programme in the North West, including the creation of the Speke - Garston Development Company joint venture with Liverpool City Council. Later, as Commercial Director of the Agency he helped to transform the performance of Priority Sites, a joint venture with the Royal Bank of Scotland, and set up other commercial joint ventures, Network Space (Langtree) and English Cities Fund (Legal and General/AMEC); the latter of which is currently undertaking the St Paul's Square scheme in Liverpool's Commercial District
In July 2001 he became Chief Executive of Liverpool Vision, the Urban Regeneration Company responsible for overseeing the regeneration of Liverpool City Centre. In January 2008 he was appointed Chief Executive of a new Economic Development Company for Liverpool bringing together the organisations responsible for physical regeneration, business support and enterprise promotion and investment marketing in the City. By a remarkable coincidence, the new company is also called Liverpool Vision.
In the 2006 New Year Honours he was awarded an OBE for Services to Regeneration.
Jenefer graduated from Liverpool Polytechnic (now Liverpool John Moores University) with BSc (Hons) Urban Estate Management.
Jenefer is Retail Strategist within Grosvenor, a position she took up in May 2003. Previously she worked for CB Hillier Parker for 25 years, where she was Head of Retail.
She has particular responsibility for retail positioning, leasing direction and marketing within the £3 billion development programme.
She is a Crown Estate Commissioner, appointed in 2004, and a member of the Advisory Board of the National Skills Academy for Retail.
She is a past President of the British Council of Shopping Centres (BCSC) and member of the ICSC European Advisory Board. She is a governor of Westonbirt School.
Joanne Jennings is Chief Executive of Liverpool ONE, the biggest and most exciting retail led city centre renewal project in Europe, which is delivering 42 acres of shopping, leisure and lifestyle in the heart of the city. It is bringing more than 160 shops and restaurants, two new hotels, a 14-screen cinema, a five acre park, residential and office accommodation to revive the city’s fortunes in this landmark year.
Formerly Chief Executive of Belfast City Centre Management Company, Joanne was a key player in the renaissance of Belfast city centre just as the Northern Ireland peace process was being launched. Joanne was responsible for setting up the company with strong support from central government agencies, and managing, growing and delivering a new reputation for the city to a local, national and international audience.
Prior to Belfast City Centre Management Company, Joanne was a Management Consultant with Deloitte’s Economic and Strategy team with responsibility for strategic planning, marketing strategy and investment appraisals.
Alistair Parker
Development Consultancy Team, Cushman & Wakefield
Alistair Parker heads Cushman & Wakefield is Development Consultancy team. He is an acknowledged expert in retail led city and town centre regeneration schemes, in the UK and internationally. Alistair's command of a combination of disciplines including investment, town planning, financial appraisal and urban design, is the principal reason for the recognition of the firm as a centre of expertise and market leader in retail led development.
He is also much involved in the 'Sustainable Communities' programme being the advisor to Liverpool City Council/Liverpool Vision on the Grosvenor 234,000m² Paradise scheme in the city centre and to Sheffield City Council/Sheffield One in their partnership with Hammerson on the New Retail Quarter (105,000 m²). Other current involvements include the town centre schemes in Stockport, Northwich, Macclesfield, Crawley and Preston.
A graduate of Manchester University in Town Planning, Alistair Parker joined Healey & Baker in l980 initially undertaking retail agency in Ireland. He joined the Development team in 1985 and became a Partner in 1989.
He is a member of the BPF Development & Regeneration, BCSC Conference and the ODPM 'State of the Cities' Advisory Committees.
Sally is a partner at leading law firm Wragge & Co working with its 150 lawyer strong Real Estate Group. She specialises in retail lead development and investment work.
Sally's recent projects include the redevelopment of High Wycombe town centre, the sale of Royal Exchange and the purchase of Newbury Shopping centre.
Sally is a member of the BCSC Executive Board. Sally is also Honorary Secretary of BCSC and a Trustee (ex officio) of the BCSC Educational Trust
Derek is Deputy Chairman of Cyril Sweett Limited responsible for numerous major retail and mixed use schemes.
Derek's recent projects include Bristol Broadmead, Shires Leicester, Grand Arcade Cambridge and Eden Centre High Wycombe.
Derek is a member of the BCSC Board of Management and member of the Executive Board. Derek is also Honorary Treasurer of the BCSC and a Trustee (ex-officio) of the BCSC Education Trust.
