Highlights From The President, Chief Executive
and Conference Chair

BCSC President, Martyn Chase

BCSC President, Martyn Chase
“This year is a very special one for BCSC - our 25th anniversary – celebrating the contribution of the retail property industry to the local economies and communities we serve, and there is nowhere better to demonstrate this than the city of Liverpool.

“During the past few days, we have been challenged to re-examine some important issues by our speakers - from planning to business rates, and sustainability to urban regeneration. Outside of the conference, the showcase has been a real success and I was particularly pleased to welcome the Public Sector Hub this year – building on our relationship with local authorities.

"At a time when we all face challenges we have brought together nearly 3,000 people from the shopping centre industry to network, to learn and to do deals. The mood was cautious of course - but not gloomy and there was confidence in the long term prospects for our business.

“But what has made this conference really special has been the warm welcome from the people of Liverpool and the involvement of young people. Through the work of Generation 21, and by welcoming local school and university students, we have been able to explore what the future of our shopping environments and town centres might hold.”

BCSC Chief Executive, Michael Green
Michael Green, Chief Executive of BCSC, said: “In difficult times it was good to see the industry as up beat and buoyant as ever. The City of Liverpool has made us very welcome, and if the opportunity arises we would not hesitate in bringing it back again.

“The quality of speakers and their messages, together with the business generated within our showcase, has made Conference 2008 a real success.”

Conference Chair, Sir Stuart Hampson
Conference Chairman Sir Stuart Hampson closed the conference by reminding everyone of the usefulness of such events: “At a time when the industry is under pressure, it’s a huge advantage to be able to come together with so many key players from this sector and to share their views and ideas on how to move forward. That’s what gives these events their purpose and makes them so invaluable.

"Holding the BCSC conference in Liverpool meant that the power of retailing to regenerate our cities was before everyone's eyes. At a time of such economic uncertainty this event brought together the key industry players to focus on how to sustain that beneficial impact in the challenging conditions we all face."
