Guidance Note 70 - Drugs Awareness
Publication Date: 18/10/2012
(previously published as Guidance note 43, in 2005)
Drugs are substances that change people’s behaviour and the way in which the mind and body works. Substance misuse includes the use of
illegal drugs, prescribed drugs and substances such as solvents and new psychoactive substances commonly referred to as ‘legal highs’.
The inappropriate use of drugs can have serious consequences for individuals, staff, employers and business. Drugs misuse can lead to increased risk of accidents and liability, poor work performance, lateness, absenteeism and an unsettled working environment. Behaviour inappropriate to shopping centres as a result of substance misuse can influence customer perceptions, use of the centre and trading performance.
The 2011/12 Home Office Crime Survey for England and Wales identified that an estimated 12 million, or 1 in 3 people aged between 16-59, had taken drugs during their lifetime and that 3 million had done so in the last year.
The aim of this guidance note is to help stimulate a climate whereby shopping centre owners, managers and staff recognise the need to create an environment where substance misuse is not tolerated. |
