Pilot of Local Sustainable Development Lens (17/11/2008)
A Sustainable Development Commission (SDC) report has proposed the development of a voluntary basket of local indicators that can be used to guide and track progress towards sustainable development (the Local Sustainable Development Lens). CAG Consultants have been asked by the SDC to pilot the Lens with four of the Comprehensive Area Assessment pilot authorities. The report recommends that the development of the Lens should now proceed to wider discussion with local authority sustainable development and performance management officers. The report calls for an interactive Lens tool to be linked with the Data Interchange Hub and should be online, simple to use, and enable local authorities (and other users) to obtain information on all the Lens indicators, and provide information on those which they are responsible for collecting. It should provide a report on local progress towards sustainability which takes an integrated approach and possibly includes some indicators of integration.

APUDG debates effect of economic crisis on sustainability agenda (10/11/2008)
On Wednesday 5th November The Aldersgate Group and All Party Urban Development Group (APUDG) held an evidence session on ‘The Credit Crunch: Challenges for the Green Buildings Agenda’ at the House of Commons. The session included a debate on the impact of the current economic downturn on the sustainability agenda and explored some of the issues raised in recent publications by the two organisations, namely the Aldersgate Group’s Better Regulation for a Sustainable Built Environment report and the APUDG’s Greening UK Cities’ Buildings report. Speakers will included Paul King, Chief Executive of the UK Green Buildings Council, Jon Lovell, Head of Sustainability at Drivers Jonas, Peter Cosmetatos, Director of Finance and Investment at the British Property Federation, Neil Jefferson, Chief Executive of the Zero Carbon Hub and Clive Betts MP, Chair of the APUDG. John Lovell was representing the Aldersgate Group, a broad coalition of environmental agencies, NGOs, think tanks and industry representatives who believe that high environmental standards will be a major part of future economic growth and international competitiveness. John clearly expressed the view that the current economic downturn is not something that should affect the drive for sustainability because firms will see it is as good for business, even during tough times. He warned against ignoring the threats to the climate and energy provision during a recession. Paul King began with a sound bite that he believes should drive sustainability policy in the building sector: “Lean, Mean and Green”. “Lean” because sustainable buildings have lower energy costs, “Mean” because sustainability provides improved services, which reduces costs and “Green” because a sustainable property sources a higher proportion of energy from renewables. He echoed John Lovell’s comments about the green agenda being unaffected by recession and concluded that he believes there has been “an end to boom and bust for sustainability”.

‘Zero Waste Places’ announced (21/10/2008)
The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs has announced six ‘Zero Waste Places’ in England, which will aim to go as far as possible in reducing the environmental impact of waste. The locations include the London Borough of Brent, which will develop 20 Green Zones across the borough by September 2009; Peterborough, which will run a Zero Waste City Centre initiative, including the Queensgate Shopping Centre, encompassing more than 200 retailers and offices; and the West Midlands, which will create a Zero Waste Region, focusing on businesses and organisation that produce a large quantity of waste. The participating places will identify the barriers and illustrate the solutions to enable other areas to adopt the most effective approach to zero waste and will provide a year-end report in 2009.
