BCSC's Activities
BCSC has steadily developed a wide range of activities as membership has grown:

Annual Dinner: Held at the beginning of December, this marks the start of the seasonal celebrations for the property industry and includes the presentation of the BCSC Gold Awards.

Awards programme: BCSC promotes a series of awards to recognise achievements:
  • BCSC Gold Awards (formerly known as Shopping Centre Awards) These awards honour the work of the developers, owners and designers of the year’s best new and refurbished or extended shopping centres. A Gold Award may be awarded to any submitted project that demonstrates innovation and excellence, regardless of size or category. A Special Award is also given to the project considered the best of all those submitted and the one that is deemed to have moved the industry forward the most during the year.
  • BCSC Town Centre Environment Awards First presented in 1991, the Town Centre Environment Awards are open to all local authorities or town centre management initiatives, and recognise town centres that have significantly improved their environments for both visitors and shoppers.
  • BCSC Purple Apple Marketing Awards Awarded for the first time in 1993, this award acknowledges initiative, imagination and inspiration in shopping centre marketing. There are a number of categories and recognition is given to advertising and promotions which produce retail sales, enhance customer loyalty and increase customer and community awareness while representing the best use of marketing budgets.
  • BCSC Diploma in Shopping Centre Management: An Advisory Board, set up in conjunction with The College of Estate Management, Reading, oversees the progress and development of a two-year diploma course increasingly recognised as providing formal qualifications for shopping centre managers. Nearly 500 shopping centre managers have successfully completed the course, with some 40 new students entering the diploma course each year.

BCSC Educational Trust: The BCSC Educational Trust has funds available to support worthwhile education and research projects relating to the planning, ownership, occupation management and use of retail property.

BCSC Scotland: BCSC recognizes the distinctive role played on our members’ behalf by BCSC Scotland representatives relative to the Scottish Executive. BCSC Scotland also works within BCSC to ensure a successful series of events north of the border.

Committees and task forces: Members are able to contribute to a number of committees which keep under review particular issues of interest to the retail property industry. Task forces are also formed from time to time in conjunction with other interested parties to focus on topical issues.

Conference and Showcase: Held in the autumn of each year, the event provides an occasion for all those involved in retail property to meet and enjoy an informative programme of presentations, workshops, exhibitions and related activities.
